THE MENTAL HEALTH SPIN

The lyrics of  “Mama Said Knock You Out”  by LL Cool J speak to the John Bowlby’s theory of Secure Attachment.  “Bowlby determined that our attachment to parental figures (in particular, he argued, to mothers) plays a huge, critical role in our ability to learn, grow, and develop healthy adult relationships. Without a strong attachment, we are destined to be deeply disturbed.”

The four basic attachment styles per Bowlby are secure, ambivalent, avoidant, and disorganized.   LL Cool J’s song speaks to Secure Attachment, which is “when children are securely attached to their caregivers (parents), they feel happy whenever their caregivers are around, but are upset when they get separated from them. While the child is in distress when his parent is away, still, he feels secured with the feeling that his caregiver will return sometime soon.”

“Mama Said Knock You Out” is an anthem to all mother’s who have provide a safe, consistent, affectionate, and encouraging environment for their children.  A child who grows with this Mama feels able to Knock Out any obstacle, any wrong, and threat, because their Mama has got their back wherever they are.  If Mama is with me, who in the world can be against me!?  In other words, if Mama says it, I believe it, so it must be true.
